Getting a new headliner

Sunshade in my Jetta Sportwagen had disconnected it self from the passenger side rail. Apparently the only way to fix this is removing the headliner, which means I will be getting a new headliner in my 9 year old car, under CPO warranty no less.

I think the idea is that they can access the clips that hold the sunshade on with the headliner off, and that once the headliner is removed it has to be replaced with a new one. From what I’ve read on this repair it’s more involved than what they’re telling me, but as long as it ends up fixed I’ll be happy. I am a little worried though, I don’t imagine this being a common repair at a dealership. I’m sure they’re up to it, but you do have to wonder when the last time they had to do something like this was. Maybe headliner replacements are really common, how would I know?

Honestly a falling sunshade is a totally reasonabl e thing to happen in a 9 year old Volkswagen. I don’t fault VW for it happening, but I am glad I have the warranty to cover it, I imagine this would be unnecessarily expensive otherwise.

Des pite what the CPO warranty manual says I have been provided a loaner at VW’s expense. 2020 Jetta. I like it. Y eah it’s a little boring but it’s pretty nice. I think the styling hits a good balance between contemporary but conservative . This is the 3rd new Jetta I’ve driven and they’ve all been perfectly fine. I could see myself buying one someday. Although I still prefer my MK6 wagon. Just feels cozy compared to the wide new Jetta.

Being out of my car does make me appreciate it more. I am quite fond of my manual diesel wagon.

These manual diesel wagons are definitely special beasts. I love my MK6 and have had zero problems in the 18 months I’ve owned it.

My mom’s Volvo had something similar happen (it’s a 2014, I think) and with Covid there hasn’t been a chance to fix. The shade is stuck retracted, which isn’t actually a big deal.

I’m thinking most panoramic roofs are gonna be long term maintenance nightmares but I’m just enjoying mine on every drive and leaving the worrying for future me.

The last sunroof I had developed a leak so I sealed it from on top with silicone and disconnected the electrics.

They actually have a vendor on hand that does this stuff, it won't be a dealer tech who takes care of it. More likely than not, so I wouldn't be too worried. But this is a common problem on sportwagons tbh, that and failing headliners is typical Volkswagen by the ones I saw there lol.

That overhead light looks very familiar, probably the same part number as the one in our old B5.5 Passat wagon.

I did this repair! Good on you for still having the CPO warranty to cover it, otherwise you might have found yourself faulting VW a bit more.

For p arts only the dealer quoted $400cad for the shade and $50 more for the tiny plastic clips that attach to the track. I didn’t even ask about labor but can’t imagine it’d be less than 5 hours of shop time as the rear glass has to come out and the whole headliner. To free the headliner you have to remove all the interior pillar trim that connects to it and a bunch of the plastic body trim below that too to release it.

I found a complete shade replacement kit on AliExpress for $83 and took most of a Sunday to tear the car apart and fix it.

One of my prouder fixes, I taught myself some new German swearwords especially for the occasion.

While you are in there make sure they check the connection from the drain pipes (orange in photo above) to the white nipple/nubbin that plugs into the sunroof pan. On my gen the glue would degrade and they’d leak. Also they should clean out the outlet valves in the wheel wells that the hose drains to. If those plug you end up with a spare tire well full of swamp water
